Recruiter career guide
What a Recruiter does
A Recruiter helps an organization find and hire people. The role can include:
- Meeting hiring managers to understand what a job requires
- Writing or reviewing job descriptions
- Finding potential candidates through applications, referrals, networking, or search tools
- Reviewing applications and speaking with candidates
- Coordinating interviews and sharing feedback
- Supporting offer discussions and keeping candidates informed
- Tracking hiring activity and following employment policies
Some Recruiters work in-house for one organization. Others work for a staffing or recruitment agency and help multiple clients. The role may focus on a particular industry, type of job, or stage of hiring.
A typical day
A day may involve:
- Checking new applications and responding to candidates
- Holding calls with hiring managers about open roles
- Searching for candidates and contacting people who may be a fit
- Conducting screening conversations
- Scheduling interviews and collecting feedback
- Updating hiring records and following up on offers
The balance of these tasks varies. Agency roles may involve more business development and client communication, while in-house roles may involve closer work with internal teams and longer-term hiring plans.
Skills you need
- Communication: Explain roles clearly, ask useful questions, and keep people updated.
- Listening: Understand what candidates want and what hiring managers need.
- Organization: Manage several roles, conversations, and deadlines at once.
- Judgment: Compare a person’s experience with job requirements without relying on assumptions.
- Relationship-building: Treat candidates and colleagues with respect, including when the answer is no.
- Research and digital skills: Find candidates, use hiring systems, and keep records accurate.
- Resilience: Handle delays, changing priorities, and unsuccessful searches professionally.
- Fairness and discretion: Protect confidential information and support consistent, inclusive hiring practices.
How to become one
Education
A specific degree is not always required. Employers may value study in human resources, business, psychology, communications, or a related subject, but relevant experience and communication skills can also matter.
Certifications
Certifications in recruiting, human resources, or employment practices may help you build knowledge or show commitment. Requirements vary by location and employer, so check which qualifications are recognized where you plan to work.
Entry routes
- Apply for roles such as recruiting coordinator, resourcing assistant, or HR assistant.
- Look for entry-level Recruiter positions that provide training.
- Build transferable experience in customer service, sales, administration, or HR.
- Learn how to conduct structured interviews, assess job requirements, and use applicant tracking systems.
- Seek practical experience through internships, volunteering, or supporting hiring activities where appropriate.
Career path
A typical progression may look like:
- Recruiting coordinator or resourcing assistant
- Recruiter or Talent Acquisition Specialist
- Senior Recruiter or specialist Recruiter
- Recruiting team lead or Recruiting Manager
- Head of Talent Acquisition or another senior HR role
Some Recruiters specialize in a profession, industry, or type of hiring. Others move into HR, people operations, workforce planning, or recruitment consulting. Progress depends on skills, experience, and the opportunities available.
Is it right for you?
Recruiting may suit you if you enjoy speaking with people, balancing several tasks, and helping teams make hiring decisions. It can also be a good fit if you like a mix of research, relationship-building, and practical coordination.
Consider whether you are comfortable with changing priorities, confidential conversations, and candidates or roles that do not always work out. If you prefer predictable tasks with little interaction, some recruiting roles may feel demanding.
